Lynn Chadwick at Houghton Hall

Literally just up the road, Houghton Hall is the setting of landmark summer art exhibitions, this latest is the largest exhibition of Chadwick's work in over twenty years and therefore unmissable even though had no prior knowledge of the artist's work.

Initially formed from bronze, his later works are fashioned from stainless steel - constructed rather than formed, reflecting the artisist initial career as an archite tural draughtsman and trade constructor. Prisms in the angular pieces reflect light in different ways and it would be interesting to see how they look at sunset.

Chadwick's final work includes the female and male representations of triangle and rectangle, a delicately-poised kietic structure that moves delicately in the breeze. Installed on the lawn, it directly faces the Sitting Couple on Bench, perhaps distilling and challenging their essence.

I wasn't really taken by the "beasts" in the show, though I did appreciate this one

I liked the Large Barley Fork piece in the courtyard best. TO me it looks like a snarling menacing beast, in contrast with the strangely passive beast elsewhere. This latter piece was completed posthumously and this is the first tiome it's been shown in public.
